It is built on a steep rock at the southeastern edge of Thassos and is a dependency of the Athonite Monastery of Philotheou. It was founded around 1090, following a vision of Saint Luke, to whom the Archangel indicated the source with the miraculous holy water “en Gonatais.” The most important relic of the monastery is a fragment of the Holy Nail (a nail from the crucifixion of Christ).
